Color footage of atomic bomb tests with active duty military personnel at Camp Desert Rock, Nevada Test Site, Nevada. Shows soldiers in foxholes as nuclear detonation occurs nearby; light and shockwaves; blowing dust; soldiers climbing out of foxholes and running towards mushroom cloud. Some of this footage is familiar by virtue of having been seen in the film Atomic Cafe. Many soldiers who were present were exposed to high levels of radiation.

Actual war footage of the 1945 bombing of the U.S.S. Franklin – Sailors fighting for their lives.

The USS Franklin was bombed in March 1945 near Okinawa, Japan with a considerable loss of life. She was badly damaged by a Japanese air attack in March 1945, with the loss of over 800 of her crew, becoming the most heavily damaged United States carrier to survive the war. The remaining crew members gained control of the fires and ultimately brought the ship back to the U.S. mainland for repairs, missing the rest of the war; she was decommissioned in 1947.

Atom bomb testing of 1946 – Soldiers present that day were exposed to high levels of radiation

This video shows the atom bomb testing and it’s devastating effects. The United States built a model city in Nevada with dummys, canned food, buldings, cars and many other items to show the effects of the bomb after it went off. Many of the soldiers who were miles away but present to view the explosion were exposed to radiation and many got cancer years after the testing.
